Finally getting serious....

Well, here's my little post of how it's going for me....
I had a real hard time getting started last week. But as of yesterday I'm starting to get serious.
For the first time in A REALLY LONG TIME (like months) I didn't have any sweets yesterday (I count sweets as refined sugary treats: candy, cookies, cake, frosting on graham crackers [my downfall of the weekend], pop, etc.) - so I've made it probably 32 hours without a sweet. I have a major sweet tooth—which if not monitored (as it hasn't been for a while) borders on addiction. You laugh…I'm not joking. In addition, as much as I wanted to I did not have a snack while watching tv (Biggest Loser - maybe now you know how I stuck to that, HA!)
I weighed in yesterday to see how I was doing and it does look like I will have my typical your not eating whatever you want anymore easy first week weight loss. SO! I'M ON THE WAY!

How are you doing? What have you taken on this week to improve upon?

  1. My friend and I gave up sugar for Lent--even though neither of us are Catholic, we both feel it's a great personal self-control strenghtener... And, of course, it just so happened to be just before Valentine's day, during my hubs' birthday, as well as pretty much the time of year that sugar is the only thing that sounds good. But surprisingly, it's been easier than I thought to give it up for "that long" (it did seem like it would be forever!). I think having that excuse to say no to people when they offer me something tasty (I always feel rude when I turn down something someone has made for us!) has been good.

So, here's hoping I can make the rest of the weeks!

Plus, that means more calories in other food that I can eat. Yippee!!

  2. Congrats Penny and Michelle,

Not giving up sugar (totally), but I have been more conscientious of what I am putting in my mouth. This week on the treadmill I have tried something just a little different. Since I wear ear buds while I'm on the treadmill, I attempt to not look at the distance (or time) until the song is done. Now, for me, this is harder than it sounds. I set a goal (ex. run 1 mile before walking a mile) and I can't look at the distance until the song finishes. I have found that I run further when I do this as I don't allow myself to count down that last half mile down. I'm not perfect at it, but I am getting better.

    1. Connie - This is a great trick! Well done and thanks for sharing. If you can 'get lost' in the moment, you aren't watching the clock. Keep it up!

    2. I do the same thing, Connie!! And, when I can't seem to keep my eyes off how long it's been, I cover up the display with a tshirt or something else, and force myself to just keep going. It does make it feel a bit easier.

  3. I agree that not eating sugar has been the hardest part of dieting. I could eat chocolate all day every day it seems like. Since we have started this win by losing program, I have definitely been more conscious of what I've been putting in my mouth, but because I've been sick, I haven't been able to exercise as much I as would like. This makes me feel so unbelievably guilty... I'm hoping I can start working out hard again tomorrow or Thursday.

Good luck ladies! I appreciate the motivation! :)

  4. OK - so here are some words of wisdom from my current trainer.

Food is for fuel not fun!!!

If we can start thinking about food from a value added perspective, it is easier to reduce our reliance on certain items. Start really paying attention to labels and determine what food will best enable you to fuel your body so that it operates at the highest level. Using an on-line tracking tool will help you start looking at the distribution of healthy fats/calories/carbs as part of your total calorie allottment.

Small changes folks! Rome wasns't built in a day ;-)
